FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Freshman Morgan Fuqua earned Shenandoah University's first-ever ITA singles title with her championship today in the Blue 3 flight.
Fuqua, who opened the tournament on Saturday with wins over Aubrey Hawn from Randolph and Brooke Warden from Thomas More, earned the title with two more wins Sunday.
In the semis, Fuqua defeated Jessica Liu from Haverford, 6-1, 6-1. The championship versus Bridgewater's Jamiah Lewis took three sets with Fuqua coming out on top 7-6 (2), 6-7 (2), 1-0 (10-5).
The championship is the first-ever earned by an SU women's tennis player at an ITA regional tournament. Anne Stephenson '04 was a finalist in the championship singles flight at the 2003 Southeast Regional championships.
Fuqua's classmate, Alyssa White, won a pair of consolation matches Sunday. She defeated Natalie Edwards from St. Mary's (Md.) 8-1 and Ali Tomasevich from Goucher 8-3 to advance to the Blue 6 flight consolation championship.
That championship match, versus Bridgewater's Whitney Cash, was unplayed.
In doubles, Fuqua and Caitlin Tilton's consolation match was left unplayed.
