WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team opened its 2018-19 season with a 65-54 non-league home win over Hood College Saturday afternoon.
SU (1-0) led for all but 26 seconds in the opener. Hood (0-1) went up by two after a Rian Wright three in the second quarter but junior Ashley Stone answered back with one of her own. The Hornets held the lead for the remainder of the game.
A six-point Blazer run gave HC a two-point lead. SU then scored 14 straight with 3:55 remaining in the second, allowing the Hornets to go into halftime up by eight, 35-27.
Shenandoah and Hood traded buckets throughout the entire quarter until SU broke out five unanswered points in the last 4:37 of the third.
The Blazers outscored SU in the fourth 19-17 but SU saw its largest lead of the day, 16 points with 5:38 remaining.

"The first game is always in challenging in terms of the unknown as far as scouting the opponent but I thought we had confidence and poise," head coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft said. "Playing time was distributed nicely and the scoring was balanced as well, we are happy to start on the right foot for the 18-19 season."

SU shot 52.1% compared to Hood at 34.5%.
Hood shot 70% from the line, SU was 13-21.
Ashley Stone led all scorers with 16 after going 7-9 from the field.
SU out-rebounded HC 38-28.
The Hornets put 38 points in from the paint.
The Hornet bench contributed 26 points in today's game.
Shenandoah continues a three-game homestand on Wednesday, November 14th at 6 p.m. The Hornets will host the Fighting Squirrels of Mary-Baldwin.
