Class of 2019 Spotlight - Kayla O'Connell

Class of 2019 Spotlight - Kayla O'Connell

WINCHESTER, Va. - We continue our look at the Class of 2019 by meeting softball standout Kayla O'Connell.

Major:
Exercise Science with minors in pschology and mathematics
Sport Played:
Softball
Why did you choose Shenandoah?
I chose Shenandoah because of the guaranteed admission to the Athletic Training program, the small class sizes, and it's the perfect distance from home.
Favorite Class and Professor:
Basically any class within the EXSC department, but especially Psych of Injury with my on campus "mom" Dr. Peacock.
What do you like most about playing sports at SU?
My teammates are the best people in the world and I have kept me sane through many ups and downs of season. Also, I really enjoy playing in one of the toughest DIII conferences in the nation. I like to refer to the ODAC as the SEC of DIII for softball.
Favorite thing to do in Winchester:
Go to Packs Dairy Corner! Ice cream is my favorite.
Favorite SU Athletics Memory:
My first collegiate at bat, I hit a grand slam off of a 3-2 count. Coach asked me if I could stay back on a change up and I said yes, and then she put me in to pinch hit. Got to the 3-2 count and couldn't stop shaking. I was so nervous, but it turned out good.
What has playing athletics at SU meant to you?
Playing athletics at SU has been amazing. It's given me opportunities to meet and bond with not only my teammates but other teams as well causing me to interact with people outside of my major.
Post-Graduate Plans:
Currently I am in Athletic Training school at Shenandoah. When I finish this is 2020, I hope to work in an undertermined setting. Eventually I want to get my PhD and be able to contribute to concussion research in some sort of way.
Nobody knows that I...
cried on the Tower of Terror this past summer. Unfortunately, there is video proof.
