WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Athletics Department hosted a "Kids Day Out" Thursday afternoon as part of its D3 Week celebration.
The SAAC and department hosted 65 second-graders from Orchard View Elementary in Frederick County for an afternoon of fun on the Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium turf.
The students were instructed in soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, baseball/softball and football as well as doing agility work and hearing from selected SU student-athletes.
The program was part of an initiative at Orchard View in properly channeling aggressive energy in an athletics environment.
The students spent two hours at SU and got to sample all of the sports after listening to the SU student-athletes speak.
"This was an awesome day," said head field coach Ashley Smeltzer, who coordinated the event with fellow SAAC advisors Lindsey Lutz, C.K. Calhoun and Corbin Sutton along with SAAC President Brittany Butcher.
"The kids had so much fun and I know our student-athletes had a great time as well. I look forward to hosting them again."
