WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's lacrosse team opened up its 2018 season Wednesday afternoon with a 23-1 non-league victory over Averett.
The Hornets (1-0) equaled their best-ever defensive effort in nearly shutting Averett (0-1) out; the Cougars were playing in their first-ever intercollegiate men's lacrosse contest.
AU scored its lone goal at the 11:16 mark of the fourth.
Shenandoah wasted little time in jumping all over Averett – Michael Brooks scored off of a Ryan Schott assist 59 seconds in before setting up Eric Sawyer at the 8:40 mark with what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Shenandoah led 4-0 after one, 10-0 at the break and 17-0 heading into the fourth.
Mullinix led this group with four goals and one assist for five points.
The Hornets dominated in all phases as Marshall's squad took 61 of the game's 67 shots, won 24-of-27 faceoffs and grabbed 50 of the 61 groundballs.
"I was happy to get everyone involved today (in the season opener)," Marshall said. "It is also great to get the season started on a winning note."
SU was also 19-for-19 in clears and broke 12 of the Cougars' 26 clearing attempts.
Shenandoah takes to the road Saturday afternoon for a non-league game at Mary Washington.
