2017 Captains (L-R): Morgan Lingo, Elizabeth Pardo, Morgan Payne

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University Head Field Hockey Coach Ashley Smeltzer-Kraft announced Thursday the co-captains for her program just ahead of the squad's Friday opener.

Smeltzer-Kraft, the 2016 ODAC Coach of the Year who led SU to its first-ever league championship last season, announced that seniors Elizabeth Pardo and Morgan Lingo as well as junior Morgan Payne will serve as co-captains for the 2017 season.

"These three women are all excellent leaders," Smeltzer-Kraft said.

"All three have earned academic honors from the NFHCA during their careers and two of the three have been named All-ODAC.

"They are excellent examples of student-athletes - they are as successful in the classroom as they are on the field."

Lingo and Pardo both started all 22 games last season with Lingo posting three goals and one assist for seven points and Pardo two goals and five assists for nine points.

Pardo was a first team All-ODAC and ODAC All-Tournament selection before capping her season by earning NFHCA All-Region honors.

Payne, a member of the Hornets defense, started 16 of 19 games she played in and had a team-high 29 points on 12 goals and five assists.

She had the game-winning goal of the ODAC Championship Game and was a third team All-ODAC honoree.

Pardo is the second member of her family to be named captain of a sport at SU. Her older brother, Ricky Pardo '15, served as co-captain of the 2015 baseball team.

Shenandoah opens its season tomorrow in a 3 p.m. non-league game at Hood.
