Rochester Shuts Out Hockey

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – No. 15 University of Rochester advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 with a 2-0 victory over Shenandoah University Wednesday in the opening round of the 2016 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament.

The Yellowjackets (18-4) used a dominating offensive performance to end the Hornets (13-9) season. U of R did not allow a shot until the 69th minute and held a 13-0 advantage in penalty corners in advancing to this weekend's regional round at Messiah College.

Morgan Lingo had that shot for SU, which was stopped on a defensive save by Colleen Maillie.

Shenandoah goalkeeper Jessica Brown was outstanding all afternoon, posting 10 of her 14 saves in the opening stanza.

After playing excellent defense for the first 33:27, Shenandoah saw the Yellowjackets break through with 1:32 remaining in the first half on a Maillie unassisted goal. Mallie, coming down the right side, ripped a 12-yard shot that was deflected just inside the left post.

UR took all 15 of the first half shots and had a 6-0 advantage in penalty corners.

With exactly nine minutes remaining, Sayaka Abe ripped a shot from just inside the attacking circle that Samantha Dow was able to get a stick on an deflect over Brown's right shoulder for the insurance goal.

"I am very proud of my team," SU coach Ashley Smeltzer-Kraft said. "Rochester is such an experienced team - they made it to the Elite 8 last season and they knew what to expect today. It was all new to us. This was a great experience."

Shenandoah ends its season by setting a new program record for wins as well as earning its first-ever ODAC championship.
