Hockey Hosts Marlins Tuesday

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University field hockey team seeks its fifth straight appearance in the ODAC Tournament semi-finals when it hosts Virginia Wesleyan Tuesday evening in a 6 p.m. quarterfinal round contest.

Shenandoah (10-8) earned the No. 4 seed and subsequent home game by defeating VWC 5-2 in Virginia Beach on Saturday.

This will be the third time in four years that SU has played a regular season finale against the same school that it faced in its opening game of the league tournament.

In 2013, SU, as the No. 2 seed, earned a bye into the tournament semi-finals after defeating Randolph-Macon 4-1 in the regular season and then saw the Yellow Jackets advance to the championship game with a 3-2 overtime victory in the semis.

In 2014, Shenandoah topped Eastern Mennonite 2-1 in the regular season finale before eliminating the Royals from the tournament three days later with a 3-1 win in the quarterfinals.

The winner of tomorrow's contest advances to Friday's 5 p.m. semi-final round contest versus top-seeded Lynchburg. The LC Hornets will host the tournament semi-finals and finals on Friday and Saturday at Shellenberger Field.

Shenandoah comes into the game fourth in the league in scoring at 3.3 goals per game while VWC is seventh at an even two goals per outing.

Freshman Taylor Hayes leads SU in scoring with seven goals and eight assists for 22 points; her assists total is second in the league.

Hayes is one of seven women playing for coach Ashley Smeltzer-Kraft with double-digit points; Morgan Payne has 20 points and along with Melissa DeiTos, co-leads the team with eight goals.

Seniors Asiah Allen and Taylor Marshall are the Marlins top scorers with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Marshall has seven goals and one assist for her 15 points with Allen combining six goals and four assists for her 16 points.

Defensively, the Hornets allow 1.88 goals per game and Virginia Wesleyan 2.93.

Shenandoah goalkeeper Jessica Brown has played 1016:45 over 17 games this season with 63 saves and four shutouts.

Sophomore Skye Swain is the Marlins primary goalkeeper and she has 112 saves in 1072:19 of action over 17 games.

For fans unable to travel to the contest, live stats and video are planned for the entire tournament. Links for both can be found on the schedule page.
