WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University ran its field hockey winning streak to three matches by downing Frostburg State 2-1 in non-conference action Thursday evening.
The Hornets (3-1) scored the opening two goals of the game and then had to hold on as FSU (0-2) attempted a furious rally.
The Bobcats cut the deficit in half in the 29th minute as Rachel Merritt converted on a penalty stroke.
Twenty-seven minutes later, Merritt had the chance to bring the match back to level as Shenandoah was again whistled for a major foul in the shooting area and Frostburg awarded the stroke.
Fortunately for the SU fans, junior keeper Sarah Clare was up to the task and stuffed Merritt on the attempt.
The save would be the ninth and final one of the contest for Clare.
The Hornets had a 20-14 advantage in shots while the Bobcats took 13 of 19 corners.
SU hosts Christopher Newport on Sunday in a 2:00 non-league match.
