LYNCHBURG, Va. – The No. 11/14 Shenandoah University baseball team wrapped up the No. 1 seed at the upcoming ODAC Tournament for the third consecutive year by sweeping a doubleheader at Lynchburg Saturday afternoon.
Shenandoah (30-8, 15-5 ODAC) clinched that top spot with 4-1 and 8-2 victories over Lynchburg (9-28, 5-15).
SU has reached the 30-win mark for the fifth time in the past seven years thanks to the two victories.
As the top seed, Coach Kevin Anderson's club faces the tournament's No. 6 seed on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the opening game of the tourney.
In game one, senior lefty Darrell Thompson (5-2) went 8 1/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out six, to earn the win.
Thompson turned it over to classmate Phillip Morse for the final two outs, and Morse shut the door with a groundout and a flyout for his eighth save of the spring. Morse is now one save from tying the program record for saves in a season.
Mossman worked the final three innings for his third save of the season.
In the opener, SU scored two runs in the third and two more in the eighth to provide Thompson more than enough offense; junior Jake Loew had a two-run single in the third that put Shenandoah on top to stay.
Johnson gave Anderson a fifth player with two hits thanks to his 2 for 4 contest that included an RBI double in the fourth.
Arocho drove in four runs with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, a double in the seventh and a two-run single in the eighth.
