WINCHESTER, Va. - We continue our #ThrowbackThursday series with a look back at the 2009 NCAA Division III Baseball Championships.
Submitted by Lisa Nelson, mother of Cory Nelson '12, today's picture highlights the "Hornets Nest", a group of fans that supported the baseball program through its historic run to Appleton, Wisconsin and the national championships.
The Nest was in full force in Appleton, as the supporters bought out all the Shenandoah gear at the merchandise tent in record time. SU had arguably the largest contigent of fans at the championships, a surprising development considering two of the teams were within three hours drive of tournament.
Included in the group for the championships was none other than Shenandoah President Tracy Fitzsimmons, who made the trip out for the Hornets opening game against Farmingdale (N.Y.) State.
Despite falling short of its national championship goal, the 2009 baseball team set the standard by which all future baseball teams are measured.
The 38 wins remains a school record and five of the players on the '09 squad would eventually be named All-America during their careers.
