Riegler Leads Baseball Selections

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Freshman Matt Riegler leads a group of 10 Shenandoah University baseball players earning All-USA South Conference honors in selections announced Tuesday afternoon by the league.

Riegler, who has functioned as the Hornets closer for most of the season, was named as the league's Rookie Pitcher of the Year.

This is the sixth time in the past five years that a member of the SU program has earned a major baseball award from the league.

Last season, Greg Van Sickler '11 was named as both the league's Player and Pitcher of the Year while coach Kevin Anderson earned Coach of the Year accolades.

Scott Van Dusseldorp '10 earned Player of the Year honors in 2010 and Van Sickler grabbed Rookie honors in 2008.

Riegler is the first SU player to be named as Rookie Pitcher of the Year.

Anderson had two players named to the league's first team, four on the second team and two to the honorable mention squad.

Senior Mike Minch rounded out the honorees by being placed on the league's All-Sportsmanship squad.

Senior Jake Pendergraft and junior Nick Beall are the first team honorees at outfield and designated hitter, respectively.

For Beall, it is his second straight first team selection.

Pendergraft, in his first season as a starter, currently leads the USA South with a .436 batting average and his second with 37 RBI. Pendergraft has 15 multiple hit games this season.

Beall is second to Pendergraft with a .406 average and is 27 walks in second best in the league as well.

Kurt Krout (shortstop), Cory Nelson (utility and pitcher) and Corbin Lucas (outfield) grabbed the four second team selections.

Krout is hitting .354 this year with six doubles, a triple and 16 RBI from his No. 2 spot in the batting order.

This is the second straight year he has been named All-USA South.

Nelson, the Hornets primary first baseman and a weekend starter on the mound, earns All-USA South honors for the second and third times in his career after hitting .307 with 32 RBI on 15 doubles, two triples and five home runs.

On the mound, he is 4-3 with a 1.76 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 56 1/3 innings pitched.

Nelson has won his last three starts, including a victory over now No. 2 Christopher Newport University this past Saturday.

Lucas, who has been named as the league's Rookie of the Week twice this season, is currently hitting .319 with eight doubles and two home runs.

Juniors Joey Donofrio and Vince Claudio, at outfield and pitcher, are the two honorable mention selections.

Donofrio, who is hitting .355 so far this season, leads the Hornets with seven home runs from his leadoff spot. This past weekend, he was a combined 4 for 10 in a USA South Conference split against CNU.

Claudio is the squad's No. 1 starter and opened the season with a victory over then No. 5 Cortland (N.Y.) State. Claudio is 4-1 with a 3.02 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 47 2/3 innings pitched.

Shenandoah returns to the diamond on Thursday at 4:30 against N.C. Wesleyan in the opening round of the USA South Conference Tournament.
