Buzzy Voting Open

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced Friday that voting for the Fifth Annual Buzzy Awards is open now through 8 a.m. Monday.

Student-Athletes should get the voting link URL from their coaches. The voting deadline is Monday morning at 8 a.m.

The 2018 Buzzy Awards Ceremony is Tuesday, May 1 beginning at 6 p.m. in the Ferrari Room of the Brandt Student Center. All SU faculty and staff are invited to this event, which will be hosted by Justin Mehrer and Nakona Wolfe

Note: The details on the nominees are included on the ballot.

Play of the Year Award

Top play of the year from a mix of the spectacular, the important, and the iconic from the Shenandoah Hornets. These highlights are a microcosm of the great year we had as an athletic department. The following are nominees for Play of the Year:

  • Jenna Barr, Softball, pinch hit grand slam vs. Hunter College 
  • Melissa DeiTos, Field Hockey, two goals in 33 seconds 
  • Chris Grady, Football, interception vs. Randolph-Macon 

Breakthrough Team of the Year Award

Squad that showed significant improvement, perseverance, and notable success over the course of their season to achieve new heights. The following are nominees for Breakthrough Team of the Year: 

  • Men's Tennis 
  • Women's Basketball

Comeback Player of the Year Award

Student-athletes face all different types of adversities throughout their playing careers, which can help serve as an opportunity to propel themselves and their teams forward. This player used that opportunity to make a significant impact in their program this year:

  • Chris Chaney, Men's Basketball 
  • Shannon Kuhn, Women's Basketball
  • Mike Plath, Men's Golf 
  • Katie Seidl, Softball
  • Nikki Zerna, Women's Lacrosse

Best Upset of the Year Award

Throughout our seasons, we work hard each day to prepare for our competition. We strive to persevere over our toughest rivals. The following rewarding victories are nominees for best upset of the year:

Best Moment of the Year Award

Within a season, there are moments that help define our teams or a student-athlete. These moments significantly impact programs, student-athletes and coaches as well as our fans, and are memorable for all involved. The nominees for the Best Moment of the Year are:              

  • Kirstyn Arcata, Women's Basketball
  • Football, Homecoming win over Bridgewater
  • James R. Wilkins', Jr. Athletics & Events Center Opening Night 
  • Men's and Women's Lacrosse OneLove Game 
  • Doc Schulte, Men's Golf, first collegiate victory at Glenn Heath Memorial
  • Men's Soccer, First win under new coach Matt Smith

Record Breaking Performance Award

This award is presented to the record-breaking single-play, game, or season performance of any sport (team or individual). This award honors the most remarkable, significant, or impressive performance of the year. The nominees for Record Breaking Performance are:

  • Chris Smith, Track & Field 
  • Jonah Meredith, Men's Basketball
  • Hayden Bauserman, Football
  • Maryann Hollen, Softball

Rookie of the Year Award – Male and Female

This award is presented to the best athlete in his or her initial year of intercollegiate eligibility in the sport under which they have been nominated.

Outstanding Staff Member

This award is presented the staff member at Shenandoah who has gone above and beyond in the service of our student-athletes.

Player of the Year Award – Male and Female

This award recognizes our best male and female performers in competition during the current athletic year. All athletes are eligible for these two awards.

Outstanding Team of the Year Award

Recognizing success on the playing field, in the community and in the classroom, this award reflects a dedication to the ideals of a Division III intercollegiate athletics.
