WINCHESTER, Va. - Led by 43 student-athletes earning President's List honors, the Shenandoah University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics posted a 3.08 average GPA for the fall 2016 semester in team grades announced Monday by the department.
Twenty-Eight of those student-athletes, representing 17 of the department's 21 sports, all posted perfect 4.0 GPAs this past semester on their way to earning President's List honors.
Students who earn at least a 3.90 GPA in a semester are named to the President's List.
The 28 have an average cumulative GPA of 3.92.
The 43 President's List honorees represent 19 of the 21 intercollegiate athletics programs with baseball posting a department-best six honorees. Women's soccer had five honorees and both football and volleyball four each to come in just behind baseball.
Sixteen of the 21 intercollegiate athletics programs had at least a 3.0 team GPA with women's tennis leading the way at 3.69. Men's Golf had a 3.62 team GPA to lead the men's side.
All six women's tennis student-athletes posted at least a 3.32 GPA while all seven men's golfers were at 3.17 or above.
Women's soccer was third with a 3.46 and women's lacrosse fourth at 3.41.
"The academic performance this past semester was outstanding," Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Doug Zipp, said.
"The high level of achievement shows that our students and coaches truly embrace the Division III ideal. They excel not just on the playing fields, but in the classroom and in the community as well.
"I could not be more proud of everyone."
Ten of the 11 women's teams: basketball, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field and volleyball, posted at least a 3.03 GPA.
Baseball, along with cross country, golf, lacrosse and soccer, posted at least a 3.10 GPA for the men. Tennis just missed, coming in at 2.96.
