Harriers Second at USA South

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Both the men's and women's cross country teams concluded their membership in the USA South Conference with runner-up performances Saturday at the league championships.

Christopher Newport University won both championships, winning 29-48 over SU in the 6000 meter women's race and 27-32 in the 8000 meter men's.

All-USA South honors were determined by individual race finish, and the SU women had five women earn All-USA South accolades. Amy Smith and Roni Frye both made first team, with Smith finishing third at 24:14.53 and Frye fifth with a 24:31:53.

Dorothy Earner was ninth, Emily Hesse 12th and Denise Mitchell 21st to round out the three additional All-USA South honors. Earner and Hesse were both second team and Mitchell third team.

On the men's side, SU had the second, fifth, sixth, seventh and 12th place finishers, but lost out to the Captains 1, 3, 4, 9 and 10 finish.

The only non-SU/CNU runner in the top 18 was Methodist's Craig Cicero at eighth.

Senior Josiah Renton paced the Hornets with a 26:21.87 that was good for second overall with classmate Kyle Gutierrez coming in fifth at 27:14.13. Sophomore Chris Clemons had the sixth place showing at 27:20.51 and Jake Garcia was seventh with a 27:26.74.

Tim Robinson rounded out the men's scores with a 27:37.70 that was good enough for 12th.\

Shenandoah is off until the NCAA South/Southeast Regionals in Seguin, Texas in two weeks.
