Harriers Sweep Home Opener

KERNSTOWN, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2011 season Thursday afternoon with a pair of victories at the SU Opener.

Thanks to a sweep of the top three positions on the women's side, the Hornets totaled 25 points defeat Southern Virginia by 17 points and Penn State - Altoona by 29.

Marymount rounded out the four-team, 5K event with 91 points.

The Shenandoah men were even more dominant, winning the three-team race with 15 points to 57 for PSU-A and 68 for Marymount.

The men also raced five kilometers.

Coach Andy Marrocco's men had the top five finishers and eight of the first 11 runners to cross the finish line at Kernstown Battlefield just south of Winchester.

Senior Josiah Renton won the men's race with a 17:20.80 with sophomore Ryan Taylor second at 17:33.90.

Jake Garcia and Kyle Gutierrez finished third and fourth with 17:39.30 and 18:00.90, respectively.

Senior Amy Smith came across at 21:11.40 with freshman Dorothy Earner posting a 21:17.70 in her first collegiate cross country race.

Junior Roni Frye, who missed all of track season last year with an injury, was third at 21:22.90.

Both the men and women are back in action this weekend at Salisbury.
