Marrocco and Frye Earn All-USA South Accolades

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Shenandoah University took 50 percent of the cross country major awards announced Wednesday by the USA South Conference.

Freshman Roni Frye was named as the league's female Rookie of the Year while head coach Andy Marrocco was named as the USA South Conference Coach of the Year for both men's and women's cross country.

Frye has been named as the league's Rookie of the Week four times this season as she recorded four top 10 finishes in five races. She won her last race at Hood College, besting a field of 110 runners with a time of 24:40 over 6000 meters.

This is the second consecutive year that SU has had the Rookie of the Year. Last fall, current sophomore Amy Smith earned the award.

Marrocco becomes just the second Shenandoah coach to earn USA South Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year honors. Brendan Chamberlain was named as the women's coach of the year in 1999 after leading the Hornets to a third place finish at the conference tournament.

This season Marrocco has led his women to a current No. 5 ranking in the USTFCCCA South/Southeast poll as the squad has defeated two ranked teams and has finished no worse than fifth in any of the five races this fall.

On the men's side, the team has continually improved its standing all season long and capped that improvement off with a runner-up showing two weekends ago at Hood.

The all-conference teams will be determined based on the results of the championship meet this Saturday at Hagen Stone Park in Greensboro, N.C. Those teams will be announced Saturday afternoon.

Shenandoah is attempting to end a 16- and 10-year holds on the men's and women's crowns, respectively, by Christopher Newport University.
