GREENSBORO, N.C. - Shenandoah University just missed out on earning its first-ever USA South Conference cross country championship Saturday afternoon with a pair of second place performances Saturday at Hagan Stone Park.
The SU men, who took the top three places, were especially close as champion Christopher Newport edged out the Hornets by two points.
Sophomores Josiah Renton, Kyle Gutierrez, and Jake Garcia went one, two and three, respectively to give SU 32 points. Unfortunately, CNU came in with finishers four through 10 to win its 17th consecutive title.
As three of the top 15 finishers, Renton, Gutierrez and Garcia all earn All-USA South Conference accolades.
The SU women had six women earn All-USA South honors with the fourth, eighth, ninth, 10th, 14th and 15th place finishers, but four of the top five finishers for Christopher Newport spelled the Captains 11th straight title.
Junior Jennie Ott was the top finisher with a 24:20 while Amy Smith, Roni Frye, Tracey Swope, Justine Hastings and Brandi Sobanko joined Ott on the All-USA South squad.
For Ott, it is the third straight year that she has been earned first team All-USA South honors.
Both teams are off next week and return to action on November 14 at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional hosted by Guilford College.
