Cross Country Strong Again


 

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Shenandoah University continued its strong cross country seasons with a pair of top 10 performances Saturday at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.

The SU women, currently ranked sixth in the South/Southeast Region came in fifth of 13 teams in the 158-woman, 5000 meter race.

Host Carnegie Mellon, the No. 9 team in the Mideast, won event with 54 points while the other three schools between SU and CMU were all Division II institutions.

The Hornets, with 114 points, beat fellow South/Southeast Regional opponent Mary Washington by two points. UMW was ranked just ahead of SU this week.

Junior Jennie Ott was 9th overall and second among DIII runners with a 19:54. Freshman Roni Frye backed Ott up with a 14th place, 20:14 and sophomore Amy Smith was 21st at 20:35.

Frye was seventh of the DIII runners.

The SU men were 10th of 14 teams, and the fifth place Division III team in the 8000 meter event.

Josiah Renton (28:15) was 60th, Jake Garcia  (28:28) 66th and Kyle Gutierrez (28:31) 68th.

Both teams have their final meet prior to the USA South Conference Championships on October 31 at Hood College next week.
