GREENSBORO, N.C. - Shenandoah University posted a pair of
runner-up finishes at the annual USA South Conference cross country
Championships at Hagan Stone Park in Greensboro Saturday
morning.
The combined finish is the best-ever for coach Andy Marrocco's
squad. Last season, the SU men were second, but the women finished
third in the 10-team women's event.
This season, led by freshman Amy
Smith's 4th place showing, the SU women were runners-up to
perennial power Christopher Newport University.
Christopher Newport won both races - the Captains had a first,
second, third, fifth and a sixth to record 17 points to the Hornets
45 in the men's race while CNU outscored SU 18-60 on the women's
side.
In that women's race, the Captains posted a first, second, fourth,
fifth, sixth and a seventh place among the scoring teams in the
race. (Salem College competed as a guest squad and had the third
place finisher. Her result was discarded for scoring purposes.)
In addition to Smith's fourth (third for scoring), Shenandoah had a
ninth, 10th, 16th and an 18th place finish.
Freshman Josiah
Renton matched Smith with a fourth place finish in the men's
race. He was backed up with an eighth, 10th, 11th and 14th place
finishes.
