Averett Ends Hornets Volleyball Run

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - No. 2 Averett University ended the Shenandoah University volleyball team's run in the USA South Tournament with a 3-2 semi-final round victory Friday night at Christopher Newport University's Freeman Center.

It is the second five-set win for Averett (26-10) over Shenandoah (18-17) in the past three weeks.

As in the October 22 matchup at Averett, the Hornets were victorious in the first two sets.

Friday night, coach Jaime Terenzi's club won at 23 and 21 to find itself just one victory away from posting its second straight upset of the tournament.

Unfortunately for SU, the Cougars rallied for the win by downing the Hornets at 23 and 16 in sets three and four before clinching it with a 15-8 victory in the fifth.

Averett advances to the tournament championship with the triumph and will face either No. 1 CNU or No. 4 N.C. Wesleyan in Saturday's championship.

The loss also ends Shenandoah's run in USA South volleyball. Next season, the spikers will join the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Junior Megan Gillispie paced SU in the semi-final round match with 12 kills while sophomore Haley Smith added 11.

Senior Rachel Maki and freshman Samantha Schambach both added seven kills.

Juniors Emily Jones and Mary Harshman led the defensive effort with 22 and 17 digs, respectively.
