Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University volleyball team nearly snatched victory from the jaws of defeat Saturday afternoon before falling 3-2 in a non-league match to Randolph College.

Randolph (2-0) won the first two sets 25-17 and 29-27 before Shenandoah (1-1) forced a winner-take-all fifth set with two victories at 20 in sets three and four.

Unfortunately for the home fans, the WildCats scored the first four points of the fifth and clinched the match with a 15-11 triumph.

Trailing 10-5, SU was able to cut the deficit to just two - 12-10 - before RC used a Shana Nelson kill and a Hornets attack error to bring itself within one point of the win.

Nelson, who had match-high 19 kills, finished the contest with a spike down the line.

Senior Rachel Maki paced Shenandoah with 13 kills with Mary Harshman adding nine along with 18 digs.

Maki had a double-double thanks to 10 digs.

Shenandoah is back in action on Wednesday at future ODAC opponent Lynchburg.
