Captains Sink Tennis

WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Christopher Newport University used dominating doubles performances to key a USA South Conference tennis sweep over Shenandoah Wednesday afternoon.

The Captains won both the men's and women's matches 9-0.

In the men's match, CNU (8-7, 2-1 USA South) did not drop a game in doubles to take the early 3-0 lead.

Christopher Newport then won the six singles matches in straight sets and lost just three games in the process.

Vladimir Daskalov had two of those game victories in a 6-1, 6-1 loss at No. 2 singles for the Hornets (0-10, 0-3).

The women's match was much closer, as Carla Wong and Shannon Allin fell just 8-5 at No. 1 doubles.

The No. 3 doubles tandem of Ilana Rozin and Jennifer Simpson went down 8-3.

In singles, Wong took the first set versus Sarah Stafford 7-5, but saw Stafford rally with a 6-1 victory in the second before clinching the point with a 10-5 win in a third set tiebreaker.

The SU women fall to 6-6 overall and 3-3 in the league with the defeat.

Both Shenandoah teams are in action Friday morning against Greensboro.
