NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Host Christopher Newport University claimed the USA South Conference women's soccer regular season title Saturday night with a 2-1 victory over Shenandoah.
CNU (9-7-1, 7-1-1 USA South) wins the title by a half-game over the Hornets (13-6, 7-2) with the victory.
The loss snaps Shenandoah's seven-match winning streak and prevents the team from claiming its second-ever conference title.
All three goals in the game were scored early - CNU scored its two goals in the fourth and eighth minutes while SU got back into it with a goal 48 seconds into the second half.
Freshman Taylor Oehm had that tally for the Hornets, finishing off a cross-goal feed from sophomore Jenna Kline.
In the 70th minute, Shenandoah appeared to have tied the contest on a Katie Cataldo shot, but the linesman ruled that Christopher Newport keeper Meghan Gumbs pulled the ball off the line.
The Captains outshot the Hornets 19-15, but had just a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. SU had six of the game's nine corners.
Shenandoah keeper Kat Terza had five saves, as did Gumbs.
The game completes the regular season for the Hornets and sets the team up for the upcoming USA South Conference Tournament.
As the tournament's No. 2 seed, SU will host No. 7 Meredith on Tuesday night at 7 in a quarterfinal round contest.
The semi-finals and finals will be next Friday and Saturday at the Smith River Soccer Complex in Martinsville, Virginia.
The women's semi-finals will be at noon and 2:30 on Friday with the highest remaining seed playing in the noon game.
