FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Host Mary Washington made a first half goal stand up in a 1-0 non-conference women's soccer victory over visiting Shenandoah Wednesday afternoon.
The Eagles (1-0) got the game's only goal on an unassisted tally by Sarah Tyron in the fifth minute.
The shot was one of 10 that UMW had in the period; Mary Washington outshot the Hornets 18-5 for the contest.
Junior Kat Terza led Shenandoah (0-1) with 10 saves on the day. Terza stopped six shots in the opening stanza.
The Eagles also had 6-1 advantage in corners.
Hannah Oakes, Stormie Malik and Caroline Staples had the Hornets shots on goal.
SU is back in action this Saturday against 2009 NCAA semi-finals Lynchburg in the opening game of the Lynchburg Tournament.
