Angels Rally over Women's Soccer

RALEIGH, N.C. Defending USA South Conference champion Meredith College needed a second half rally to open its women's soccer slate with a 4-3 win over Shenandoah Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Kirsten Olson scored just seventy seconds in for SU (4-6-2, 1-1-1 USA South) and the Hornets led 2-0 when Amber Womack scored at 14:07.

Unfortunately for Shenandoah, the lead would not last long.

Alex Calvert, a 2008 first team All-USA South honoree, scored at 24:21 and 40:30 to bring the Avenging Angels (6-2-1, 1-0) back to square just before the break.

Meredith added two more goals, the second by Calvert on a penalty kick at 65:12, to take a lead it would not relinquish.

Freshman Stormie Malik cut the Hornets deficit in half with her unassisted goal at 79:02, but SU could not get the equalizer.

Sophomore Brooke Strickler had four saves in her second start of the year in goal.

MC outshot Shenandoah 12-8 while the Hornets took four of the game's seven corners.

SU finishes this weekend trip with a Sunday contest at Peace.
