Pride Ends Women's Season
WINCHESTER, Va. - Fifth-seeded Greensboro College returned the
upset favor Tuesday night in the USA South Conference women's
soccer Tournament quarterfinals with a 1-0 victory over No. 4
Shenandoah.
Just hours after the fifth-seeded SU men defeated the fourth-seeded
Greensboro men, the Greensboro women (8-7-3) turned in the same
upset victory.
Shenandoah (9-11-1) was seeking its first-ever semi-final round
appearance in the conference tournament, but was done in by a Tessa
Hall goal in the 71st minute. Hall collected a rebound of a Kelli
Viana shot 10 yards in front of the SU goal and calmly pushed it
past Hornet defender Lindsey
McCleaf and into the goal.
Shenandoah keeper Kat
Terza, who finished with nine saves, was in position for Hall's
shot as she had to come off her line to stop Viana's attempt.
Despite being outshot 14-3 in the contest, SU had the best chance
to score prior to Hall's game-winner when freshman Kierra
Nicholson knocked her 25-yard shot off of the crossbar.
The Hornets had a one solid chance at an equalizer in the final 20
minutes, but Shana
Sumers' attempt from just inside the 18-yard box was blocked by
a GC defender.
Pride keeper Katie Allegro had to made just one save in posting the
shutout.
