Women Run Past Gophers

Women Run Past Gophers

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team earned its second victory of the week with a 17-5 non-league win over Goucher Saturday afternoon.

Shenandoah (2-3) jumped all over the shorthanded Gophers (2-3) for nine first half goals and never looked back.

Goucher was forced to play two women down for the entire contest due to injuries suffered in its last contest.

After GC scored the opening goal of the game on a Stefi Perry unassisted goal at 28:44, the Hornets scored nine of the remaining 10 goals in the first half to take the commanding lead.

Senior Samantha Sisson got matters started with an unassisted tally at 27:08 before freshman Brittany Arndt gave the Hornets the lead for good on an unassisted goal at 23:44.

Junior Liz Bereit had a natural hat trick in the middle of the half, with the second and third goals coming man-up, before Arndt figured in the final two goals of the stanza.

The Carroll Country, Maryland native scored unassisted at 3:39 and then with just three seconds remaining in the half, found classmate Erin Higgins with the team's ninth goal of the game.

SU expanded its lead to nine goals 55 seconds into the second and finally cracked the 10-goal barrier on an Arndt goal with 10:35 remaining.

Coach Lindsey Lutz' club scored five of the final six goals of the game.

Seven different women rigistered at least one point for the victors with Bereit and Miranda Rudacille both scoring four goals and Arndt adding three goals and one assist.

Sisson had a goal and three assists with classmate Samantha Donaghy scoring two goals and dishing out two assists.

Ashley Cross had eight saves.

Shenandoah outshot GC 30-17, had an 18-12 advantage in groundballs and won 14 of 23 draws.

The Hornets are back in action tomorrow at 2 in a non-league contest against Marymount.
