FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team opened up its 2014 season Tuesday afternoon with a 16-9 non-conference loss to Mary Washington.
The Eagles (1-0) avenged a 10-9 loss to the Hornets (0-1) in the 2013 season opener by opening Tuesday's game with nine goals in the initial 5:58 of the game.
Shenandoah struggled at the draw, losing nine of the first 10 to allow UMW to build that 9-0 advantage.
The Hornets continued to battle, however, getting on the board with a Samantha Donaghy tally at 19:09 and eventually scoring four of the game's next six goals.
Donaghy, who finished the day with three goals, closed out the first half scoring with an unassisted goal at the 51 second mark.
Mary Washington, on the strength of a 24-8 shots advantage, took a 13-6 lead into the break.
The two teams traded the initial four goals of the second, with Sisson scoring both times for SU, before Bereit tallied unassisted at 18:16 to cut the deficit to 15-9.
Sisson had the hat trick with Bereit adding two goals.
Goalkeeper Ashley Cross, who faced 37 shots, had 12 saves on the day.
The Eagles had a 25-13 advantage in groundballs, 18-8 in draw controls and broke eight of the Hornets 20 clearing attempts.
Shenandoah is back in action on Saturday at Lebanon Valley.
