WINCHESTER, Va. – Sophomore Liz Bereit returns with 'LacrosseRoads', a blog about the women's lacrosse team. This week, Liz talks about the 2013 season opener…
We had our season opener Wednesday, and we started off our year in fine fashion! We beat Mary Washington 10-9 in what proved to be a nail-biter at the end! They are ranked 13th in the nation for Division III, making them the highest-ranked team we will play this year. This also means that this was the biggest win in program history, as we have never beaten a ranked team before.
Mary Washington scored the first goal of the game, but then we rolled out to a 4-1 lead. UMW cut the deficit to 6-4 before halftime. At the start of the second half, we came out strong, pushing our lead to five goals with 9:21 left to play. UMW wasn't going down without a fight, however, and they started to mount another comeback, chipping away at our lead until we found ourselves only up by one goal with two and a half minutes still to play. Fortunately, our defense held on and we pulled off the upset!
Ed. Note: Liz is being modest. She had three goals and two assists for five points to help the Hornets to the big victory.
Winning that game will definitely go down as one of the top highlights in each of our careers. It was such a well-rounded team effort and that made the victory even sweeter. As soon as the final buzzer sounded, everyone ran together and made one giant group hug, and people were jumping around and positively beaming at each other. Even our coaches came out to greet us and join in our brief celebration. We usually contain our emotion pretty well at the end of games, but we couldn't help ourselves this time! We are all so proud of what we have started this season.
We don't have another game until next Saturday, March 9th, but we aren't taking time to dwell on the win – we are getting right back down to business. We have lots of things to work on in order to prepare for our next opponent, and for the rest of the season. We're really looking forward to our next game, not just for that specific game but also for the fact that that will set into motion our normal season schedule which includes two or even three games a week. We love this part of the year because all of our hard work finally gets to be put into competition.
We had a good couple of days of practice leading into our game as well, which really helped prepare us. One memorable day was one in which we played power-finesse for 45 minutes. This is a game in which we split into two teams and players from both teams alternate a power shot from beyond the 8-meter arc and then a finesse shot right in close to the goalie.
The object of the game is (obviously) to score goals, but the team aspect comes into the play by each player staying in the game.
It works like this: If the player misses both shots, she's out. If the player makes one of her two shots, she moves on to the next round. If she makes both shots, she gets to challenge any opposing player of her choosing for the next round and that player must make both shots in order to stay in the game. The game is over when one team runs out of players remaining.
Being such a competitive group of girls, we had to keep going until a team won two of the three matches. We matched up seniors with freshmen against the sophomores/juniors with the former group winning, but I think that was just a fluke. ;)
Until next time, Go Hornets!
