Women's Lax Shoots Down Eagles

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse opened up its 2013 season Wednesday evening with the biggest victory in program history by downing No. 13 Mary Washington 10-9.

The win is the first-ever for SU (1-0) over a ranked team.

Shenandoah led virtually throughout the contest and held a 10-5 with just more than seven minutes to play before the Eagles (2-2) rallied.

UMW scored four times in a span of 4:31 to cut the deficit to just one, 10-9, with 2:26 remaining.

The Eagles, who won just eight of 21 draws on the afternoon, won two of the final three draws to help pull themselves back into the contest.

Fortunately for the Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium faithful, SU goalkeeper Ashley Cross made three of her 12 saves on the afternoon in the final 2:09.

One save came on a free position before Mary Washington missed on another free position shot with 45 seconds remaining.

Cross' final save, with 22 seconds left, came on an attempt from eight yards out.

Shenandoah then cleared the ball to the other end of the field, where time ran out as UMW picked up the loose ball.

Mary Washington's only lead came on an Angela Sperbeck goal at 27:14 for the first goal of the game.

The Hornets then answered with four straight from the 25:16 to 12:55 marks and held a at least a one-goal advantage the rest of the way.

Leading 5-2 at the 9:23 mark of the first, the hosts saw UMW two straight to make it 5-4 with 4:43 remaining.

Sophomore Liz Bereit, who had a team-high five points on three goals and two assists, fed Corrinne Kosmowski 18 seconds before halftime to push the SU lead back to two goals.

This goal also started a 4-0 run that made it 9-4 following an unassisted Bereit tally at 22:14.

In addition to Bereit's five points, Samantha Sisson had three goals and one assist, Amy Rollins two goals and Samantha Donaghy one goal and one assist.

Keller Torrey had four goals for Mary Washington.

Shenandoah is off for the next 10 days until playing at Washington College in Chestertown on March 9.
