BURLINGTON, N.C. - Top-seeded Christopher Newport University claimed its seventh straight USA South Conference women's lacrosse championship with a 13-9 victory over second-seeded Shenandoah Saturday afternoon.
The Captains (13-1) claim the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament with the four-goal win over the Hornets (12-5).
CNU took a lead it would not relinquish with a three-goal run midway through the first half. With the score tied at 1-1 thanks to a Liz Bereit goal for SU at 20:32, the Captains scored three straight in just 54 seconds to take a 4-1 lead at the 18:30 mark.
Christopher Newport again took control, scoring three unanswered in the first 5:04 of the second.
Sisson fed Kosmowski at 23:24 to end this run, and SU scored two more to cut the deficit to 9-7.
Unfortunately for the Hornet fans, CNU ripped off four straight to effectively seal the victory.
Sisson led SU with two goals and one assist while Kosmowski, Bereit and Justina Ludwig all had two goals.
Christopher Newport outshot the Hornets 26-18 and had a 13-8 advantage in groundballs.
The two teams split 24 draws.
