West Named Coach of Year
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Head Women's Lacrosse Coach Lindsey West headlines a group of 10 women earning USA South Conference women's lacrosse honors in selections announced Thursday morning by the league.
West, in her second season at the helm of the Hornets, was named as the league's Coach of the Year in a vote of her peers.
This season, she led her club to eight wins (up from three in 2009) and a third-place finish in the league. Additionally, her team had went into the final conference game of the regular season with a chance to claim a share of the league title.
West is the second SU coach this season to be named USA South Coach of the Year.
Andy Marrocco, the head men's and women's cross country coach, was named as the Coach of the Year in both of those sports last fall.
West joins football coach Paul Barnes, men's basketball coach Robert Trent Harris, Jr., men's lacrosse coach Brian Jenkins, softball coach Marlena Kotynski and Marrocco as Hornets coaches who have won Coach of the Year honors at Shenandoah.
West had eight women earn on-field honors, led by junior Paola Aguilar's first team selection on defense.
Aguilar led the Hornets in groundballs, 41, and caused turnovers, 39, and her 28 draw controls was second best on the squad.
Five women were selected second team All-USA South.
Sara Mucciaro and Clarissa Mulligan were named at attack and defense, respectively, with Jennie Ott and Corrinne Kosmowski earning the honor at midfield and Tori Beasley in goal.
Mucciaro leads the team in scoring with 39 goals and 11 assists for 50 points, Ott has contributed 22 goals and a team-high 24 assists while posting 38 groundballs, 15 draw controls and 20 caused turnovers.
Mulligan is third on the team in groundballs with 37 and her 22 caused turnovers is second-best.
Kosmowski, a freshman, had 21 goals and three assists despite all of two games and most of another with an injury suffered in the Greensboro game. Her 42 draw controls is 14 better than the No. 2 total on the squad.
Beasley, like Kosmowski a freshman, has stopped 137 shots this season and has been named as the league's Defensive Player of the Week one time. Her seven wins this season ties a school record for wins in a year.
The final on-field selections, both freshmen, were selected to the honorable mention team.
Sydney Anderson was picked at attack and Morgan Fields at midfield. Anderson had 18 goals and 10 assists in just 11 games with Fields chipping in 19 goals, six assists, 23 groundballs and 18 draw controls. Both women were named as the league Rookie of the Week one time during the year.
