Women's Lax Drops Opener

WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Wilkes University used a strong second half Monday afternoon to key a 16-8 non-league women's lacrosse victory over Shenandoah in the season opener for both schools.

After Wilkes (1-0) scored the opening goal at 27:15, SU (0-1) answered back with goals by Kierra Nicholson and Ashley Heroth to take a one-goal lead by the 20:28 mark.

The two teams traded the next two goals, but the Colonels seized the advantage for good by tallying the final three goals of the half and taking 5-3 lead into the lockerroom.

Shenandoah scored the opening goal of the second, by Jessie Kuykendall at 23:46, and appeared to get the game-tying tally less than a minute later, but the Hornets were whistled for offside on the play.

WU took advantage of the break, taking the clearing the ball to the other end of the field and scoring what would be the first of four straight to seal the victory.

Amelia Farnham, Brittany Hodnik and Melissa Polchinski all had four goals for the victors.

Jennie Ott, with two goals and three assists, led SU in scoring while Sara Mucciaro added two goals and an assist.
