Women's Lax Drops Heartbreaker
WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University staged a furious
comeback, but came up just short in a 19-18 non-league women's
lacrosse loss to Centenary (N.J.) Tuesday afternoon on Sprint Field
at Shentel Stadium.
Shenandoah (1-4) trailed 17-9 three minutes into the second half
before roaring back to tie the Cyclones (3-0) at 18-18 with 8:45 to
play.
The two teams then went the next 5:59 scoreless before Michelle
Garone tallied the game-winner unassisted for CC.
Jennie
Ott, who led all players with three goals and four assists for
seven points, saw her potential game-tying free position attempt go
just wide with six seconds remaining.
The game is the third highest-scoring contest in school history; in
1998 SU had a 23-16 win over Hollins before losing 25-17 to Villa
Julie (now Stevenson).
The Hornets opened the scoring on Tuesday with a Rebecca
Hibble goal 18 seconds in, but this would be the only lead they
would hold all day.
The game was tied at 3-3 and 4-4 before Centenary appeared to take
total control with an 11-5 run that sandwiched halftime. The
Cyclones led 14-9 at the half and scored the first three goals of
the second before Shenandoah went on its game-tying run.
Sara
Mucciaro backed up Ott with three goals and two assists while
Danielle
Lawson made a career-best 17 saves.
