FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Sophomore Sam Akers has been named All-USA South for women's basketball in selections announced Wednesday afternoon by the league office.
Akers, a guard, was named third team All-USA South after helping the Hornets to a 9-16 overall record in the regular season by averaging 11.3 points and 3.5 rebounds per contest.
Akers' best game of the season came in a 77-68 victory at regular season co-champion Ferrum College on January 24 when she poured in a career-high 32 points on 11 of 18 shooting from the field.
She was later named USA South Conference Player of the Week for her efforts that week.
Akers is the 29th and final Shenandoah University women's basketball player to earn All-Dixie/USA South accolades. SU is leaving the USA South this summer after 20 years of membership to become members of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
Senior Kerby Hatter was also honored by the league as a member of the All-Sportsmanship team.
Shenandoah completed its season Tuesday night with a 59-44 loss to No. 2 Christopher Newport in the USA South Tournament quarterfinals.
