A Marriage Made at Mid-Court

WINCHESTER, Va. - Prior to the 2007-08 basketball season, head women's basketball coach Michelle Guyant-Holloway wanted to add another coach to her staff. It wasn't like Guyant-Holloway, who was heading into her second year as the Hornets head coach, wasn't happy with lead assistant Bob Burner, but she saw an opportunity to improve her program.

Emily Crider, who had starred for Randolph-Macon earlier in the decade and was a starter on a Yellow Jackets team that advanced all the way to the national championship game, had moved to Winchester to become a reporter for TV-3 Winchester and had expressed an interest in getting into coaching.

Guyant-Holloway met with Crider and agreed to bring her on as the second assistant.

Two years later, it is safe to say that the entire coaching staff is happy with Crider's addition to the program.

Guyant-Holloway got a valued member of her staff to assist in both recruiting and on-the-floor coaching, and the Hornets have continued their improvement under the staff's tutelage.

And what did Burner and Crider get out of the situation?

Well... on June 20, before Guyant-Holloway and every woman that has been a part of the program since the 2007-08 season, Crider and Burner were married at Historic Jordan Springs just outside of Winchester.

The couple, who became engaged in late summer 2008, were married in a short ceremony that included friends, family, Crider's college teammates and fellow athletic department coaches and staff members in addition to the women's basketball team.

In a nod to the couple's athletic background, all of the tables at the reception were tagged with colleges that held special meaning to Emily and Bob. The couple sat at the Shenandoah table, and Guyant-Holloway's role in introducing the couple was noted as the head coach was honored with a table from her alma mater, Northern Michigan.

"When I brought Emily on, I warned her about all of the single men in the department, but obviously I missed one!" Guyant-Holloway joked. "In all seriousness, it has been great having them on the staff together. They complement each other so well and that helps with everything we are trying to accomplish. This is better than I could have ever hoped for."
