Track Opens Indoor Slate

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Shenandoah University men's and women's indoor track & field teams opened up their respective 2010 seasons Friday afternoon with a pair of solid performances at the Gotham Invitational hosted by New York University.

The Hornets set five school records in the opening meet of the season, including the 800 meters for both the men and the women.

William Banks led off this group of record breakers with 7.57 seconds in the 60 meter dash while Michael Volz and MeQuel Phillips backed him up with 7.63 and 7.85 second performances, respectively.

Sophomore Brandi Sobanko had a 1:03.94 in the women's 400 meters to finish 40th overall; Kirk Lewis had a 54.45, 72nd place showing on the men's side.

Freshman Travis Bridgeforth and sophomore Kevin Schaeffer were 60th and 63rd, respectively, in the men's 500 meters with a 1:13.90 and a 1:14.87.

Freshman Roni Frye, who was the USA South Conference Rookie of the Year in cross country this past fall, now holds the women's 800 meters school record with a 2:34.29. Sophomore Justine Hastings finished just behind Frye with a 2:39.81. Frye was 32nd and Hastings 40th.

On the men's side, sophomore Josiah Renton's 2:01.85, 18th place showing qualifies as a new school best. Tim Robinson, with a 2:07.93, also competed in that event and finished 42nd.

Tracey Swope posted her first school record with a 3:23.18 in the women's 1000 meters that was good for 34th. On the men's side, Jake Garcia had a 2:52.70, 47th place finish.

Senior Kelley Mitchell had the team's top individual finish with a 35'3" in the shot put that was good for fourth overall.

Sophomore Amy Smith had the final school record with an 11:15.28 in the 3000 meters. She was 25th while Frye had an 11:52:64 that placed her 35th.

In the distance medley relay, the women finished ninth and the men 19th. Women's team: Hastings  1200, Sobanko 400, Smith 800, Swope 1600. Men:  Robinson 1200, Schaffer 400, Bridgeforth 800, Renton 1600.

Both teams are back in action in two weeks at the CNU Invitational.
