Women Sixth at Mason-Dixon

SALISBURY, Md. - Shenandoah University concluded its first-ever participation in the Mason-Dixon Outdoor Track & Field Championships Saturday afternoon with a pair of top seven finishes.

The SU women finished sixth with 31 points while the Hornet men came in seventh after posting 22 points.

Junior Brandi Sobanko had the top finish for the women, finishing second in the 800 meters with a 2:21.85.

Sophomore Amy Smith, continued her strong spring by finishing fourth in the 5000 meters at 20:09.25 and third in steeplechase with a 12:05.41.

Senior Kelley Mitchell earned All-Mason-Dixon honors in both the shot put and the discus with tosses of 10.73 and 35.75 meters, respectively. Mitchell finished fifth in the shot and third in the discus.

Sophomore Josiah Renton paced the men with fourth and fifth place showings in the 1500 and 800 meter runs. After coming in fifth in the 800 at 1:59.65, Renton ran a 4.09.06 in the 1500 meters to earn his second All-league honor.

Jake Garcia matched Smith's finish in the men's steeplechase 10:13.67, third-place outing.

Finally, the men's 4 x 400 and 4 x 100 meter relay teams had a pair of top five finishes.

Kirk Lewis, Kevin JohnsonTim Robinson and MeQuel Phillips were third in the 4 x 400 at 3:27.82 after Lewis, Terrence Jones, Johnson and Phillips posted a fifth place performance in the 4 x 100 with a 44.56.

Both teams are back in action this coming Thursday through Saturday at the MAC Championships.
