Sprinters Shine at Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Shenandoah University completed its participation in the UMW Battlefield Relays with a number of solid performances Saturday afternoon.

The women swept the top three places in the 5000 meters, with sophomore Amy Smith winning it with a 20:02.59. Tracey Swope was second and Roni Frye third with 20:27.53 and 20:45.48, respectively.

Senior Kelley Mitchell completed a strong weekend in the throwing events by finishing third in both the shot and discus. She tossed the shot 11.19 meters and the discus 35.59 meters.

Sophomore Brandi Sobanko rounded out the women’s performances by setting new school records in both the high hurdles and the high jump. She was second in the high hurdles and sixth in the high jump.

In the men’s events, the Sprint Medley relay team of Kirk Lewis, Tim Robinson, Philip Volz and Josiah Renton won the event with a 3:39.19.

The 4 x 100 meter relay team (Lewis, Terrence Jones, MeQuel Phillips and Volz) finished second by posting a 44.59.

The 4 x 200 meter team (Kevin Johnson, Travis Bridgeforth, Phillips and Jones) was third at 1:35.21.

Finally, Renton was fourth in the 1500 meters and Jake Garcia and Kyle Gutierrez were fourth and fifth in the steeplechase.

Both teams are back in action on April 10 at West Chester.
