Track Strong on Day One at UMW
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Shenandoah University posted a top five finish in every event it competed in Friday afternoon on day one of the Battlefield Relays hosted by Mary Washington.
Sophomore Kyle Gutierrez led this group by winning the 10000 meters with a school record time of 35:13.
The men and women ran in that event together, and freshman Roni Frye finished fifth in the female side of the race with a 44:04. This is also a new school record.
The men and women set new school records in the 3000 meters as well.
Sophomore Josiah Renton was second in the men’s race with a 9:15.65 while classmate Amy Smith matched Renton’s finish in the women’s event with a 11:14.24.
Tracey Swope finished just behind Smith with a 11:34.00 that was also under the previous school record. Justine Hastings rounded out the women in the event with a 12:18.03.
In the 4 x 800 meters, both the men (Jake Garcia, Tim Robinson, Kevin Schaeffer and Renton) and women (Hastings, Smith, Swope and Brandi Sobanko) finished third. The men had a school record 8:35.91 and the women posted a 10:23.15.
Kelley Mitchell completed the day for the women by tossing the hammer 117’5” to finish fourth overall.
Senior E.J. Brown and sophomore Philip Volz were fourth and fifth in the triple jump at 41’6” and 40’3.25”, respectively.
The meet concludes Saturday.
