All MAC Academic Announced

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Shenandoah University had 11 student-athletes named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll in selections announced recently by the league.

SU, a member of the MAC in field hockey and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, had members of all five of those teams on the All-MAC squad.

Juniors Paola Aguilar and Kaitlin Sommer and sophomores Stacey Giles, Casey Hertel and Amanda Mittelkamp represented the field hockey team while senior Kristen Melton, juniors Thomas McKenna and Brandi Sobanko and sophomores Josiah Renton, Justine Hastings and Amy Smith hail from track & field.

All six from track & field also participate in cross country in the USA South Conference.

They are not the only multiple sport athletes on the list as both Aguilar and Sommer play for the women’s lacrosse team in the spring at SU.  Aguilar is a Business and Political Science major and earned a 3.64 GPA this fall. She set school records with nine goals and seven assists for 25 points to help the field hockey team to a school record seven wins. 

Sommer started 14 of 16 games with two goals and two assists.  She earned a 3.79 GPA as a Political Science major.

Giles is a Biology/Pre-Pharmacy major from Greenwood, Del. and boasts a 3.808 GPA.  As a sophomore, she started 15 of 17 games and had two shots on goal. 

Hertel, a Sports Management major, earned a 3.24 GPA.  She started all 17 games with four goals and one assist.

Mittelkamp matched Hertel by starting all 17 games and had one goal.  She is a Business major with a 3.55 GPA.

Melton, a Physical Therapy major, had a 3.88 GPA this past fall.  She was named second team All-USA South in cross country for the second time in 2009.

McKenna, a native from Alexandria, Va., competes in the middle distance events.  He is a Business Major with a 3.44 GPA.  

Sobanko has a 3.76 GPA as a Biology major.  She earned All-MAC indoor honors with the first-place finish in the Distance Medley Relay (DMR) this year and was an outdoor All-MAC honoree last year in the heptathlon.  She also has been named All-USA South in cross country.

Renton is a Music Production/Recording major with a 3.27 GPA.  As a freshman, he earned all MAC honors on the relay team and this year won the 2009 USA South Cross Country Championship.

Hastings, a native from Plattsburgh, N.Y., earned a 3.82 GPA as a Pre-Pharmacy major.  As a freshman she was named third team All-USA South in cross country. 

Smith earned All-MAC indoor honors by being part of that DMR championship team with Sobanko. As a freshman she earned first team All-USA South honors and named All-Region in cross country and was an All-MAC selection outdoors in the steeplechase. 

Smith is a Biology major with a 3.45 GPA.
