Nine Earn All-Mason-Dixon Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Shenandoah University finished eighth and ninth Saturday at the Mason-Dixon Conference Championships hosted by Christopher Newport University.

The SU women were eighth, missing out on seventh by one point to Catholic while the men were ninth in each team's first-ever participation in the Mason-Dixon Championships.

Coach Andy Marrocco had two different relay teams and one individual earn All-Mason-Dixon honors at the meet.

The women's distance medley relay team of Tracey Swope (1200 meters), Brandi Sobanko (400), Justine Hastings (800) and Amy Smith (1600) earned first team honors after finishing third overall with a 13:26.23.

The men's DMR team of Josiah Renton (1200), Kirk Lewis (400), Tim Robinson (800) and Kyle Gutierrez (1600) finished sixth overall with an 11:29.81 and claimed a second team honor in the process.

Senior Kelley Mitchell was the individual honoree with a toss of 10.95 meters in the shotput that was good for third overall. Like the women's DMR, she earned first team honors with the finish.

Smith had a good day individually as well, breaking her own school record in the mile by over 17 seconds and also setting a new school mark in the 800 meters. She was seventh and 10th, respectively, in those two races.

Amanda Theall, Lewis and E.J. Brown had the final three school records. Theall had a weight toss of 11.46 meters to finish eighth, Lewis set his in the 55 meter dash and Brown established a school best in the high jump at 1.77 meters. Brown was seventh in that event.

The Hornets are back in action next weekend at the MAC Indoor Championships.
