Sobanko Leads Track

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Freshman Brandi Sobanko paced the Shenandoah University track & field teams Friday and Saturday at the WCU Collegiate Invitational with a fourth place showing in the women's heptathlon.

Competing for the first-time ever in the seven-event discipline, Sobanko tallied 3095 points in to finish fourth of nine competitors in the two-day event.

The women's heptathlon consists of 100 meter high hurdles, high jump, shot put and the 200 meter dash on day one and the long jump, javelin throw and the 800 meter dash on day two.

Junior Kelley Mitchell backed up Sobanko with a second place showing in the women's shot put. She had a toss of 11.27 meters and was the highest Division III competitor in the competition.

Sobanko's classmate, Amy Smith, also had a good day with a seventh place showing in the women's 800 meters and a fourth place in the 1500.

On the men's side, freshman Kyle Gutierrez was third in the steeplechase and sixth in the 5000 meters.
