Track Strong in Outdoor Opener

SALISBURY, Md. - The Shenandoah University men's and women's track & field teams had a strong start to the outdoor season Saturday afternoon with fifth and third place showings, respectively, at the Salisbury Sea Gull Opener.

The SU women, led by thrower Kelley Mitchell's victories in both the shot and the discus, finished third of seven teams in the event.

The SU men were fifth of six schools.

The Hornets also qualified 12 student-athletes for the season-ending MAC Championships with their performances today.

In addition to Mitchell's two wins, Brandi Sobanko was victorious in the 400 meters, Amy Smith in the 800 and 1500 and Josiah Renton in the men's 800 meters.

Sobanko was also second in the 400 meter hurdles, ninth in the shot and 10th in the javelin.

Renton backed up his 800 meter victory with a second place showing in the 1500 while Kyle Gutierrez was third in the 3000 meter steeplechase.

Shenandoah is off next week and returns to the track on March 21 at the Roanoke College Invitational.
