Track Seventh at Roanoke
SALEM, Va. - Shenandoah University returned to the track for the
first time in two weeks Saturday afternoon with a pair of seventh
place finishes at the Roanoke College Invitational.
Coach Andy Marrocco saw four of his student-athletes qualify for
the season-ending MAC championships with their performances today
and school records were set in five events.
Sophomore Kelley Mitchell and freshman Amy Smith led the women to
their finish by each posting second place and fifth place finishes
in their respective specialties.
Mitchell was second in the shot with a toss of 10.84 meters after
finishing fifth in the hammer at 32.66 meters.
Smith was second in the 1500 meters with a 5:12.41 and fifth in the
800 with a 2:32.13.
Freshman Brandi Sobanko backed up Smith and Mitchell with a 28.41,
5th place showing in the 200 meter dash.
Mitchell's hammer throw was one of the MAC qualifiers, as was
Smith's performance in the 1500. Sobanko qualified in the 200, 800
and 100 meter high hurdles.
On the men's side, freshman Josiah Renton finished fourth and fifth
in the 1500 and 800 meters, respectively, with times of 4:15.78 and
2:03.89.
Renton's classmate, Kyle Gutierrez, had the best men's finish with
16:29.31 that was good for second overall.
Finally, Kevin Schaeffer was third in the 400 meter hurdles at
1:01.41.
Both teams are back in action next weekend at the Mary Washington
Relays.
