Track Opens Indoor Slate

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Shenandoah University opened its 2009 indoor track & field season Friday night with a pair of performances in the Liberty University Invitational.

Junior Sarah Hickie and freshman Kyle Gutierrez opened up the Hornets first-ever varsity indoor meet by competing in their respective 5000 meter races.

Hickie led things off for coach Andy Marrocco by setting a new school record in her race - she posted a 21.23.47 to finish 11th of 14 runners in the women's event.

Hickie's time breaks the record of 22.57.9 set by Kristen Melton in last season's Lebanon Valley Invitational.

Gutierrez was 16th of 28 runners in the men's race with a 17.00.77.

The Hornets finish competition at the Liberty Invite Saturday afternoon with 10 student-athletes competing.
