
WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University earned a split of its non-league tennis matches with Southern Virginia Thursday afternoon.
The Shenandoah University men (2-3) were 6-3 winners while the Hornet women fell 8-1.
Sophomore Candice Sullivan was the only winner for the women (3-2). She defeated Shelly Rowberry 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
The Knights (5-3) took a 3-0 lead after doubles before clinching the match with victories in the top three singles spots. Two of those three matches went to a third set before SVU was able to emerge victorious.
Things were much better for the SU men as they led 2-1 following doubles by winning 8-3 and 8-2 at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.
Shenandoah clinched the match with wins at Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 6 singles.
Sophomores Michael Milanov and Anthony Horkan as well as freshman Mo Safren were all double winners for the Hornets.
Milanov won won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles after combining with Tim Lutz to win 8-3 at No. 2 singles.
Safren and Horkan teamed up to win 8-3 at No. 3 doubled before Safren was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 4 and Horkan 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 in singles.
Both teams are back in action on Saturday against N.C. Wesleyan in a USA South Conference match. This contest will be played in Richmond.
