Tennis Splits with Captains

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's tennis team recorded a historic victory Wednesday afternoon as the Hornets split a USA South Conference doubleheader at Christopher Newport.

The SU women (8-5, 6-2 USA South) were 7-2 winners over CNU (7-5, 5-2) while the Hornet men (4-7, 0-5) lost 9-0 to the No. 9 in the South Atlantic Captains (8-9, 4-1).

Shenandoah sets a new school record with the sixth women's conference victory and the win also clinches third in the league for coach Kim Scruton's team.

The Hornet women achieved their first-ever win over Christopher by winning the top two doubles matches and then winning Nos. 1 through 5 singles.

Senior Colleen Hightower and sophomore Briana Malley paced this win - they combined for an 8-5 victory in doubles and then Hightower won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Malley 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2.

The CNU men won all nine matches in straight sets.

The SU men and women host Southern Virginia on Friday at 4:00.
