Tennis Splits at Averett

DANVILLE, Va. - Shenandoah University completed its 2009 USA South Conference tennis slates Saturday afternoon by splitting a pair of matches at Averett University.

The SU women (9-5, 7-2 USA South) put the finishing touches on its most successful conference season ever with a 6-3 victory while the SU men (4-8, 0-6) fell 9-0.

As a reward for earning their seventh conference win of the season, the Hornet women will face these very same Averett (4-8, 3-6) in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament beginning on Friday.

Coach Kim Scruton's squad secured the victory by winning Nos. 1 and 3 doubles and then the top four singles matches.

Senior Colleen Hightower had the match clinching win with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 triumph at No. 1 over Johanna Heikkinen.

All nine men's matches went in straight sets.

Both teams will play in non-conference tune-ups this coming week before leaving for Burlington on Thursday. The men host Randolph-Macon on Monday and both teams travel to Goucher on Wednesday.
